Scene Synthpop, Anyone?

For the last six months or so I have been completely captivated by the sound of scene-inspired synthpop

My problem comes however, when finding bands that fit into this genre. Apart from The Medic Droid, Breathe Carolina, The Spin Cycle and Rediscover there seems to be a serious lack in artists who fall under this category.

Blood On The Dance Floor were the first group in this Scene Synthpop style that I heard, however BOTDF slightly aggravated me after some time. I think it’s the singer, Dahvie who annoys me. His image, his hair, his dress, its all fine but his vocals compared to that of David from Breathe Carolina just don’t quite cut it. The lyrics of BOTDF are more slanted towards comical themes and the music generally more upbeat and happy however I have slowly grown tired of them and more fascinated with the likes of Breathe Carolina and more recently Rediscover. Rediscover incorporate a slightly more rocky sound into their brand of synthpop,  which is refreshing and gives some individuality to the band.

Blood On The Dance Floor:

Breathe Carolina:

The lyrical content of Breathe Carolina focuses more on love and relationships than silly, often nonsensical self indulgent lyrics of BOTDF. I find it much easier to sit and listen to Breathe Carolina over and over again than BOTDF because of this.

The Spin Cycle:

Crazy (Gnarls Barkley cover)

The Spin Cycle is very similar to Breathe Carolina, primarily because it is one of the two members from Breathe Carolina, Joshua. He creates a quieter more flowing synth based sound than the dance-orientated sound of Breathe Carolina.

Rediscover:

Baby’s Got Her Gun Out from Call Me When You Get This

I don’t really know what to say about Rediscover. To me it seems like a blend of all three previously mentioned groups. They have the speed of BOTDF and the vocals of Breathe Carolina. Thankfully however their used of more rock based drum lines gives them a unique sound setting them apart from their counterparts.

I think my journey into scene inspired music started with I Set My Friends On Fire’s cover of Crank Dat (originally by Soulja Boy). From there, I slowly worked my way into the aforementioned synthpop bands and recently screamo hiphop groups such as BrokenCyde and Hollywood Undead.

Brokencyde are the band responsible for the screamo cover of Low by Flo Rider. I thought that this was a novelty song done by a hardcore band. Thank god, I was wrong. BrokenCyde’s album BC13 and The Broken are fine examples of how hiphop can blend so perfectly with screamo. I’m not a fan of hiphop but the addition of screaming vocals and lyrics often similar to that found in crunk music, really makes Brokencyde well worth a listen.

Brokencyde:

Better than them, however, is Hollywood Undead who, unlike Brokencyde, don’t come off as a novelty act attempting to cash in on scene-obsessed teens. Hollywood Undead are without a doubt one of my favourite groups at the moment. Their album Never Going Down is a much more enjoyable album than both BC13 and The Broken put together. Not one song is annoying, aggravating or tiresome. It’s one of those albums that you can literally listen through from start to finish and then do it again straight away without ever skipping a song.

I don’t think I can stress how listenable Hollywood Undead are and how good their album is. Please, if you only go and check one band out from this list, make it Hollywood Undead.
